Here at Metro West Orthodontics & Periodontics, we prioritize the comfort and wellbeing of our patients. That’s why we offer various types of sedation to ensure a stress-free and comfortable dental experience. We offer several forms of dental sedation, including IV sedation, oral sedation and nitrous oxide sedation, and will discuss your options with you during your consultation to determine which type of sedation is right for your needs.

For individuals who feel apprehensive about dental procedures, sedation offers a pathway to achieving dental health without the stress and fear traditionally associated with dental visits. This approach is particularly beneficial for those undergoing more complex or lengthy procedures, such as periodontal surgery or dental implant surgery.

Nitrous Oxide Sedation

Also known as laughing gas, nitrous oxide is a safe and effective sedative that is inhaled through a small mask placed over the nose. This allows patients to remain conscious and cooperative throughout their dental procedure. An excellent option for individuals who may feel nervous about visiting the dentist. You are able to drive yourself to and from your appointment.

Oral Sedation

Oral sedation offers patients a moderate level of sedation, helping you remain calm and comfortable while receiving treatment. You will need someone to drive you to and from your appointment.

IV Sedation

Our team works closely with a skilled nurse anesthetist to administer intravenous (IV) sedation safely and effectively. IV sedation is the deepest form of “conscious” sedation. With IV sedation, patients can relax and feel at ease throughout their procedure, while our focus remains entirely on delivering high-quality dental care. Experience efficient, comfortable, and worry-free dental treatments with our IV sedation services at Metro West Orthodontics & Periodonticss.

Preparing For Sedation

Undergoing IV sedation requires preparation and adherence to specific guidelines to ensure patient safety and the effectiveness of the treatment. Before sedation, patients undergo a thorough assessment to determine their suitability for sedation and to discuss the procedure in detail. Written consent is obtained, and patients receive instructions on how to prepare for the day of the procedure, including fasting guidelines and medication adjustments.

On the day of your procedure, we recommend that you:

  • The patient will have nothing to eat or drink (nothing by mouth) after 12am the night before the appointment (unless otherwise specified)
  • Continue taking routine medications unless advised otherwise by your doctor.
  • Communicate any changes in your health or medical history with our periodontists.

After your procedure:

  • You will not be able to drive yourself home. Arrange for someone to take you home, as well as someone to remain with you for several hours until the sedation effects fully wear off.
  • Rest the remainder of the day.
  • Do not operate machinery, consume alcohol or engage in strenuous activities until recovered.
  • We recommend that you avoid making any significant decisions until fully recovered.
  • Children undergoing anesthesia/conscious sedation should have direct parental supervision for 24 hours following anesthesia/conscious sedation.

Dr. Takanari Miyamoto, Dr. Melissa Lang and our team will monitor you closely during your procedure to ensure your comfort and safety.
